Sackville in Shops March 16 2014
You may have read in an interview we did late last year that one of our aims in 2014 is to get Sackville in shops and increase our product range. We are beyond happy to say that the first of these objectives is now a reality. As our brand Sackville starts hitting its first shops we caught up with Louise, the owner of Vintage Dolls Boutique in Rotherham.
Here is what Louise Told us…
“I love fashion and all things vintage so I would always find myself drawn to vintage shops and fairs. Most of my working career has been in retail from sales floor to management to visual merchandising specialist. I've also worked at head offices, set up new stores and helped failing stores pull back from the brink.
I always new I wanted my own shop but never really pursued it until I saw an advert in our local paper. It was asking for applicants to come forward with their ideas for a shop. As part of Rotherham councils efforts to save the high street and using the money awarded to Rotherham through The Mary Portas pilot project they hoped to create pop up shops throughout the town. Giving would be retailers a helping hand starting their own business, with guidance, training and a small set up grant.
I entered the competition and fought of stiff opposition with my great idea and sound business plan.
It was quite a daunting experience. I had to present my idea to a panel of judges, it felt like I was in dragons den. It was also quite a risk because of the economic climate. I often wondered if I was crazy! but I believed in my idea and I was determined and highly motivated to make a success. I still am today almost a year in. I opened the doors on the 19th April and haven't looked back. Of course none of this would have been possible without the help of Rotherham council and the Mary Portas scheme and the support of my family.
I believe listening to my customers is key, listening to what they want and what they love or hate! My store is constantly changing and evolving into something I believe is unique. In a nut shell Vintage Dolls Boutique is an independent vintage inspired boutique mainly catering for women with a splash of men's wear and children's wear on the horizon. We also have our own label 'Dolly V' made to measure women's wear using original dress patterns from the 1940's 50's and 60's. My target customer is vast, from young adults to my oldest customer who is 80 this week. Basically anyone who loves vintage as I do, from rockabilly, pin-up to 1940's enthusiasts, followers of northern soul and now lovers of Quadrophenia, The Who and the Mod era just like my partner. Which leads me nicely into saying a big thank you to Modwear for allowing me to stock their own label Sackville, it looks great, feels great and is amazing quality and value.
